Fensport GR Yaris - 2022
Build and modifications for 2022
We have been so busy with work but we did manage some winter time to get on our GR Yaris! 1 year on, there is a lot of parts and modifications available for the GR Yaris and as usual we will be testing them here on our own race car.
Engine: After the valve bending fiasco last year we were never really happy with the engines performance and early January we decided to strip it down and investigate.
We found the problem! The intake camshaft lobes on no3 cylinder had moved on the shaft, this changed the valve timing and caused a loss of compression on that cylinder. The fix was easy as we have now installed the Kelford Camshafts, these shafts are machined from billet tool steel so the problem will never come back and they work in perfect harmony with the uprated Kelford valve springs.
The car has been remapped with the new cams and now pulls strong to the redline and has much higher demand for fuel, definitely a good sign! Yes we'll find time to get to the dyno soon :)
Gearbox: Last year we had a problem with gearshifts at high rpm, so whilst the engine was out this was also investigated. It turned out the new Helix single mass flywheel and paddle clutch with uprated cover assembly needed an extra 0.5mm clearance for fast shifts. This has now been engineered in to all the kits we sell.
Aero: Aero: Aero! .... well you can't get enough can you?
We started with what is becoming our own signature design of front splitter, by using aluminium honeycomb sheet mounted to the chassis and then a marine ply wearable underside and a carbon top side. The splitter is also mounted on 4 stainless wire ropes which allow upwards movement but not downwards.
To balance the front, we have added a dual element rear wing from a Mosler GT car, its mounted rigidly using alloy support bars to transfer the downforce in to the cars body.
Suspension: 2022 see new BC Racing External Reservoir coilovers with custom valving and 8kg springs all round. The BC's allow seperate bump and rebound settings which will help tame the Yaris rear under braking. Also fitted a Whiteline adjustable rear anti roll bar.
Also test fitting and using the new Swave adjustable rear camber and toe control arms
Tyres: New Toyo 888R tyres this year in 275/35/18
One of the last pieces of the puzzle was the Bosch motorsport abs system we fitted just before the first event of the year. Our Yaris did not have the factory abs system as we had removed all the factory wiring and control units.
8th May, 1st sprint event of the year and held at Croft racing circuit. Croft is a fast circuit and was a great test for our Yaris. Adrian started cautiously, the car had had many changes and the new brakes were just an amazing transformation. Picking up speed throughout the day, it came down to the very last run. Adrian started the run in 3rd overall and pushed as hard as he could to take the lead, then 1 minute later Clive Fulcher in his Impreza beat Adrian by 4/100's of a second. In fact the racing was so close just 0.12 of a second covered the top 4 cars!
12th May, 2nd sprint event and back at Blyton, a track Adrian knows well and with plenty of run off areas it would be perfect to explore the Yaris's new abs and suspension systems. Adrians words ... "I can't believe how much better the Yaris is with the new suspension and brakes making a massive difference, it goes exactly where I want it to now! I pushed the car straight from the start and set fastest overall on run 1, and gradually went faster throughout the day beating my personal best time in the GT86R"

30th June, Disaster Time!
Everyone loves a disaster story and here is ours! After winning at Blyton, and with the next sprint at Angelsey fast approaching we felt it was time to turn up the power a bit more, Tom has been refining the maps in the Ecumaster and the car was flying. Adrian went to test and the head lifted causing a massive plasma cutter like event which destroyed the cylinder wall on no3 cylinder and also ate the headgasket and a bit of cylinder head. This happened just 1 day before our next event, we didn't have spare block so nothing we could do to get the car fixed in time.
By missing the Anglesey round, we had gone from leading the championship to 34th overall :(
12th July, we bought a secondhand G16E-GTS engine and set to work on porting the cylinder head, adding our Kelford camshafts & valve springs. We also added the Lamspeed H13 tool steel cylinder head stud kit to prevent a further occurrence of head lift.
For safety we now have 3 x egt sensors and coolant pressure sensor with failsafe if coolant pressure gets too high a large warning message is displayed on the Ecumaster Dash and it will also automatically reduce boost pressure.
3rd August, Back up and running with the new engine and out mapping. All working well and we have kept power just on the safe side. Our next event will be Three Sisters, a very tight and twisty track where power is not as important.
6th & 7th August, Rounds 5 & 6 at Three Sisters circuit was run as a double header event.
Saturday started great with Adrian breaking his personal best time set in the GT86R, and setting first overall, the following runs were spent fine tuning diff settings and car setup and the final run was his fastest yet. Sunday was more or less a repeat, fastest run first time out and then pushing all day win the event outright.
The Yaris is working great, here's an in car video
After the double win at Three Sisters we have moved up to 22nd in the championship, but as we are allowed to drop our 2 lowest scores (the Anglesey ones) we are actually leading but we still have to finish high up on the last 2 events which are
R7 - Blyton Park - 4th September
